SynopsisA young photographer and his assistant suggest to Tibetan nomads to photograph them. On diverse and more or less exotic backgrounds, families present themselves to the photographer. Through these shots, the photographer will weave unique links with each of the various villagers.
Director’s StatementHow long did it take to make your short? Was it difficult to get financing?
I wrote the scenario in one week and two months later we obtained the financial support of the French CNC and ARTE French television. But shooting was much more complicated because the crew was formed by French and Chinese technicians and with Tibetan actors. With such a team, shooting in China next to Tibet was extremely complex. The first two attempts to shoot the film failed and finally the third succeeded.
Which thoughts come to mind concerning a “European cinema community”?
To me, the two most essential concerns are the diversity and the liberty of expression which are most possibly at the heart of European cinema.
If you owned a theatre for one night, which films would you screen?
Hmmm, it’s a pity that it is only for one night. I would love to organise a special screenings for children like my three-year-old daughter. Of course, they can shout and run in the theatre. Or maybe, four or five films for the night, is it a good idea for kids? So these films would be: PIPPI LONGSTOCKING, MARY POPPINS, THE WIZARD OF OZ, DONKEY SKIN, THE KING AND THE MOCKING BIRD…
What is your next project?
A particular film, strange and mysterious. I would leave you some suspense.
Hu Wei’s cultural film Butter Lamp has been capturing the heart of the film world and has just been nominated for a 2015 Oscar. This was not the only respected film festival to take notice of this exciting film, as it has achieved the grand total of 70 film prestige film awards and was selected by over 200 film festivals including Cannes, Sundance, Rotterdam Film Festival and the New York Film Festival, quite a feat for a little film from China.
In the Butter Lamp, a young photographer and his assistant suggest to Tibetan nomads to take their picture. Against diverse and mote of less exotic backgrounds, families appear to the photographer. Through these shots, the photographer weaves unique links with each of the various villagers.
Butter Lamp’s director Hu Wei was born in Beijing, China, he lives and works between Beijing and Paris. Wei graduated at La Femis, the National School of Fine Arts in Paris and Le Fresnoy. Butter Lamp is only his third film, although this multi-award winning movie is only his second fictional short and now this talented director is currently directing his first ever feature film. AFI Film Festival selection also praised the film, “The Grand Jury prize for Live Action caught us by surprise with its spellbinding and poetic simplicity. Traversing hundreds of miles of geography and spanning generations of time without leaving one central location, this film functions as a profound mediation on the practice and effects of image making.”
This live action short was written by the director Hu Wei, stars real life Tibetan nomads and was produced by Julien Feret, the beautiful cinematography was created by Stephane Degieau and Jean Legrand. Some of the 70 awards include; the Grand Prize at the Clermont Ferrand International Short Film Festival, the Golden Plaque Award at the Chicago Film Festival, the prestigious Grand Jury Award at AFI Film Festival (American Film Institute), a winner at London’s Raindance Film Festival, Best Short Film at Mexico’s Guanajuato International Film Festival and it was selected for a EFA (European Film Awards) nomination.
Wei wished to create a film between fiction and documentary, reality and drama, modern civilization and traditional habits. This award winning film and his outstanding work has captured the attention of the worldwide film industry, making his initial wish quite the reality.
The Academy Awards will be held in Hollywood on Sunday 22nd February.
LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 live action short films will advance in the voting process for the 87th Academy Awards®. One hundred forty-one pictures had originally qualified in the category.

The Academy’s Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting at screenings held in Los Angeles. Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco in December.
The 87th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
The Oscars® will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network and hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

Il 6° Ascona Film Festival apre le sue porte giovedi 2 marzo 2017 alle ore 18.30 presso l’Hotel Ascona (Via Signor in Croce, 1- 6612 Ascona, Svizzera). La manifestazione è completamente gratuita al pubblico grazie al generoso sostegno dei prestigiosi sponsor. Il ricco programma di Cortometraggi Internazionali, selezionati da Andrea Biasca-Caroni, spazia tra differenti generi e temi. I 28 film in concorso in lingua originale con sottotitoli in inglese verranno proiettati nell’elegante salone dell’Hotel Ascona durante le serate del 2-3-4 marzo. Durante le tre serate il pubblico e la giuria voteranno i film in concorso provenienti da 13 nazioni di tutto il mondo. Il pubblico stesso potrà vincere dei premi tra cui un volo in elicottero. Si apprezzeranno le interviste Skype ad alcuni dei registi che spiegheranno live il loro film al pubblico in sala. I corti saranno tutti delle vere rarità non essendo distribuiti nelle nostre sale, cosa che i cinefili sapranno di certo apprezzare. Alcuni di questi film nonostante siano appena stati prodotti hanno già vinto prestigiosi premi come è il caso di “Réplique” di Antoine Giorgini premiato al più importante Festival dei corti, quello di Clermond-Ferrand, piuttosto che “Bellissima” di Alessandro Capitani vincitore del Premio David di Donatello. “Thank you Mister Imada” di Sylvain Chomet è stato selezionato al Festival International de Cannes e “Zvir” di Miroslav Sikavica alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs de Cannes. L’avventura dell’Ascona Film Festival nata 6 anni fa attraverso i Social Networks, grazie ad un cambiamento tecnologico dell’Industria cinematografica è nel frattempo cresciuta contando in queste edizioni più di 15’000 film candidati da 125 Paesi di tutto il mondo. Anche quest’anno si potranno ammirare delle opere d’arte di qualità che pur utilizzando la formula del film breve sono di grande impatto riuscendo a donare spunti di riflessione profonda. Questa edizione si propone di essere ricca di un’estetica che appaghi la sensibilità e susciti un’emozione nello spettatore. Opere engagé si miscelano ad altre che seguono un filone più leggero alternando molteplici espressioni estetiche. Die 6. Ausgabe des Ascona Film Festivals beginnt am 2. März 2017 um 18.30 Uhr im Hotel Ascona (Via Signor in Croce, 1- 6612 Ascona, Schweiz). Die Veranstaltung ist für das Publikum vollkommen kostenlos dank der grosszügigen Unterstützung von renommierten Sponsoren.
Das vielfältige Programm von Internationalen Kurzfilmen, ausgewählt von Andrea Biasca-Caroni, umfasst unterschiedliche Filmgenres und Themen. Am Abend vom 2.-3.-4. März werden die am Wettbewerb teilnehmenden 28 Filmen in Originalsprache mit englischen Untertiteln im eleganten Saal vom Hotel Ascona vorgeführt. Währen diesen 3 Abenden werden die Zuschauer und die Jurie über die Filme von 13 Ländern aus der ganzen Welt abstimmen. Das Ascona Film Festival ist in diesen Jahren laufend angestiegen, und über 15‘000 Filme aus 125 Länder haben sich beworben.
Ausserdem werden wir für den „Out of Competition“ 2 internationale Gäste bei uns begrüssen. Mauro Pagani, der unter anderem auch künstlerischer Leiter beim Gesangswettbewerb „Sanremo“ war, wird sein letzter Videoclip „The Big Man“ vorstellen. Und im selben Ramen wird die Weltbekannte Künstlerin Ingeborg Lüscher den Kurzen Dokumentarfilm „A closer look: being Harald Szeemann“ vorführen. In diesem Kurzfilm geht es um die abenteuerliche Erwerbung des Archivs und der Büchersammlung von einem der berühmtesten Verwalter der Welt vonseiten des Getty Research Institutes in Los Angeles.
Das Ascona Film Festival ist stolz darauf auch dieses Jahr wieder eine Hilfsorganisation zu unterstützen, diesmal wird es die Organisation „Ärzte ohne Grenzen“ (Médecins Sans Frontières) sein, welche im 1999 den Friedensnobelpreis gewonnen hat.

3. Ascona Film Festival
Siamo lieti di annunciare la terza edizione dell’Ascona Film Festival, festival internazionale del cortometraggio organizzato unicamente tramite i social network, che si terrà da giovedì 27 febbraio fino a sabato 1. Marzo 2014 sul Monte Verità nella sala eventi dell’albergo Ascona, in via Signore in Croce 1.
Anche quest’anno siamo stati inondati da oltre 1500 iscrizioni da tutto il mondo. Per il concorso internazionale abbiamo selezionato 29 corti provenienti da 15 paesi per le tre serate del nostro festival, e due lungometraggi fuori concorso, che proietteremo il sabato pomeriggio. Il primo è un thriller poliziesco tedesco intitolato “Bissige Hunde”(Attenti al Cane), prima produzione di Alex Eslam. Il secondo lungometraggio è una commedia nera svizzera prodotta a Los Angeles intitolata “Who Killed Johnny?” di Yangzom Brauen, prodotto Shari Marcacci(artista cresciuta nel Locarnese), interpretato da Melanie Winiger, Max Loong e Carlos Leal.
Tra i film in concorso quest’anno vi sono “Aquel No Era Yo” di Esteban Crespo, Spagna, nominato agli Oscar 2014 nella categoria cortometraggio non animato, “La Lampe Au Beurre De Yak” du Wei Hu, China, film di sfondo tibetano, “Drunk History Christmas Special” di Jeremy Konner, USA, con Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendez e Jim Carrey e una divertentissima video opera intitolata Metube: August sings Carmen ‘Habanera’, di Daniel Moshel, Austria, parte della competizione YouTube del Sundance Film Festival di Robert Redford.
Quest’anno vi è pure una selezione generosa di cortometraggi svizzeri, come “Vigia” di Marcel Barelli, vincitore del pardino d’argento nel concorso nazionale dei cortometraggi al festival di Locarno nel 2013, “Tauchä” di Dominik Locher in concorso al Festival del Premio Max Ophüls, che è il festival più prestigioso per il giovane film tedesco e “Hylas und die Nymphen” della giovane attrice Lisa Brühlmann.
I film saranno proiettati in inglese o con i sottotitoli in inglese. L’entrata al pubblico rimane gratuita.
Quest’anno i concorrenti si contenderanno tre premi del pubblico, messi generosamente a disposizione dai nostri. Primo premio di CHF 1000.-, secondo premio di CHF 700.- e il terzo premio di CHF 500.-
Un ringraziamento di cuore anche a Electronic Studio di Locarno, che mette nuovamente a disposizione lo schermo gigante.
Con la crescita del festival, ci sono stati anche dei cambiamenti nei criteri della selezione: abbiamo deciso di concentrarci maggiormente sui film di finzione abbandonando, per intanto, la video arte e la art video. In più, quest’anno siamo in grado di invitare vari artisti ad essere presenti durante le loro proiezioni. Speriamo di poter offrire sempre di più sia agli artisti che al nostro pubblico negli anni a venire.
